The end of AIDS!
SINGAPORE : Researchers at the National University of Singapore may have found a potential cure for viral diseases like SARS and HIV.
They have created an antibody that can ’capture’ large molecules such as viruses, and neutralise them before infection takes place.
Viral diseases like SARS, HIV and even the common flu have long defied attempts of a cure, due to frequent virus mutations. And that is why, for instance, people have to take flu vaccines every season.
Moreover, the rate of viral mutation may also delay the speed at which the body’s immune system can recognise, and deal with, the infection. Antibiotics may be taken to fight the bacteria — which further aggravate flu symptoms — but they do not actually target the virus itself.
So Singapore researchers have developed particles — each less than one—tenth the thickness of a human hair — that can recognise viruses.
Assistant Professor Tong Yen Wah, Faculty of Engineering, National University of Singapore, explained: "We create a nanoparticle that can recognise the entire structure of the virus, so even if the virus mutates partially, the structure will still be recognised by the nanoparticles and will still capture it to prevent infection."
The method involves mixing solvents and different organic molecules which researchers said can be commercialised cheaply and easily.
These are heated for 24 hours in low heat (40 degrees Celsius) under continuous stirring. The template molecules which are used to create the ’imprint’ are then dissolved through repeated washing, resulting in the nanoparticles.
The process behind Dr Tong’s work is called molecular imprinting. By fusing the nanoparticle and the virus, what he has done in effect is to create a new particle that will only recognise, and therefore capture, the specific virus.
The virus may then be removed from the body by cleaning the blood, in a process similar to kidney dialysis. Dr Tong is working on a handheld device that will do the job.
Another option is to inject the nanoparticles into the body, but he said dialysis is preferable as it is safer.
Molecular imprinting is not yet widely used in the industry, although some pharmaceutical companies use it to purify vitamins and proteins. The process has so far been used to capture small proteins, and this is the first time a team has successfully patented a way to capture large molecules.
Initial tests using this patented method on the protein Albumin have been successful, winning the team a US$100,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
And if the researchers can demonstrate their idea on viruses, they will receive an additional US$1 million in funding, while providing the world with another weapon against infectious disease. — CNA/ms
this is why i love singapore. sometimes we are being kiasu the right way.haha!

During these chaotic times, serenity can be a boon and a bane.
strolling in chinese garden can be fun at night.thats wad i've realised. and i've also found out that i react faster to my sense of hearing than my sense of sight. but not to worry, to prevent myself from going into shock i hav my trusted mp3.
A levels are just around the corner and it really pisses me off because during this crucial times, the best form of entertainment for me has to surface.music and rugby. i hav the money to buy the tickets but just not the time to waste watching. how sad is that.
firstly.....

can you believe this?! its a whole bunch of percussionists performing..actually, not all of them are percussionist. the only thing i could use to convince myself from not going is that they will have the exact same show.Another 'Masters of Percussions' in the future, complete with giovanni hidalgo, just like in the CD.now that is truly entertaining. This show is mostly indian instruments. so its not really Masters of Percussion. the one which i have in CD form, those include congas, drums, all those latin percussion stuff.so the show is really when the masters of percussion totally combine to give a show. now thats wad i call be-e-aye-you-tiful!
Secondly...!!!
yes people!! SCC 7s. where one can find good hardhits, sleek sidesteps and the 'shocked-face' dive before the ref blow the whistle for a try! actually u can find that at most rugby games. haha! 2 days for $20. alot of action plus plenty of chics. soccer chics are basically bimbos. rugby chics are are much smarter + prettier.heh!
life is short.life is short.life is hot.life is short.life is sort.life is short.

offcially, the letter came. im gg in on 6 january. vocation is the police force. i guess i'll be hanging around chua chu kang more often den...and look forward to only watch the next year Rubgy A divs championship.
its really terrible to be on the home team. i wanted to join the army, go into jungle and train, learn to throw hand grenades, shoot a rifle.or maybe the navy or air force, but all that is not going to happen. hopes and dreams dashed. to atleast try for guards and stuff. but all that is not gg to happen. i want a real tough time while serving NS. its a test of discipline. and many told me police force is a place to slack. in addition to that, they dun play rugby there. im very disappointed. and very disappointed with myself. im just soo unlucky. and for somebody who dislike the 'people of the law', im gg to have to be one of them. of all the people they put in the army, they choose those who would be more willing to slack and take MCs while those soo willing to go full speed ahead left in the dumpster. CMPB screwed up! haaai....
DISAPPOINTMENT!
its been a tough time. worst, patience thining.
a very tough time indeed...

i miss the old saregamapa. the really old ones! when sonu was the host! that is really very serious stuff. the show now is more for the teenage audience, portraying the image of hip and pop music. arghh!!! globalisation sets in again. i was just watching some of the old videos of saregama and i was quiet shock at the songs that the contestant sing then. Raag this...Raag that. and the judges are people dat even i dunno but i can for sure come to the conclusion that those people are really old school classical-singing legend because i saw zakir hussain seated next to them.
i dun really like the idea of saregama following the something like indian idol. it used to be a weekly battle of the contestant. that is really fun. and hardly do i see a live band playing like the old shows. i remember my whole family would sit infront of the tv to watch saregama, i wld be lying down and some seated here and there, my sister would be folding laundry but all eyes glued to the tv.nobody would change the channel and nobody wanted to. because it was soothing, it was entertaining, its now only memories.
and sonu nigam would sing a song before the whole show starts. that dun happen anymore.and they have special judges.by the end of the show they would come up to the stage and read out scores and the winner will come back next week and battle another contestant. one of the best segment would be 'judges choice'. sometimes u can see the contestant actually tremble awaiting to hear the judge's song choice. haiz! i miss saregama!!
u dun hear this on tv animore...how sad...

life in singapore is sooo fast paced. to earn a living nowadays, we have to work our ass off just to achieve a decent living. go home sleep wake up and back to work, sometimes forgetting breakfast lunch and dinner. that is really bad. and u do know at times when one gets really tired from working, we need to eat to energise and sleep to rest. but in singapore, if you do just dat, they will have people to replace you. its that competitive even for degree holders.
its such a sad fact, but its really true. in addition to that, the cost of living is ever rising. we can hardly afford cars. the summons and ERP is enought to put the dreams of owning a car to sleep. A 'FINE' city. and the people taking on the public transports is astronomical now. they provide seats just enought for the needy while the rest pay a huge load to stand.how sad! there is no alternative cheap mode of transport. its always Pay And Pay.but that is beside the point.
wad im trying to say is when people overwork and have to pack like sardines and do the most scarriest things to lead a decent living, should the government do something to provide us a better life? its not like everybody is sitting on their asses waiting for money to fall from the sky.
i tink we should consider letting singaporeans enjoy the finer things in life. less work. more pay.
before everybody starts doing this in the mrt....

EF WAN!
yes! finally i got time! F1 was simple awesome. eventho singapore will be doing it for the next 5 years, its wont be the same as the first time. it was truly experimental yet with high success. and i have a thing for being the first. like going for the first NDP at marina bay with diq. it was a memorable nite. but unlike NDP, F1 was a more 'movable' event. armed with a digicam i strayed at first den roamed when i knew i had acess to aniwhr basically. climbing and jumping to get spots to shoot the cars. it was mildly adventurous i have to say. and the best part is i went alone. so i dun have another opinion to change my mind when i did silly things.
the first thing i notice on the way there was the smell of burning rubber.u can see skid marks on the tracks and the atmosphere was slightly smoking, maybe due to the nascar test runs they had in the afternoon. i was realli all hyped-up. i mean, i love cars. the faster the better.and being a singaporean living in a 'fine' city, F1 cars are the fastest legally right now to have on the streets. so i rather not miss this beautiful chance.who knows i might not live to see the next SG grand prix.saw afew local starlets on the way there. but even that is not enough to steal the show.
den the test rounds begun, followed by the qualifying rounds.it was fun to see F1 on tv, the engine sounds nice. very adrenaline rushing noise, especially during cornering. kind give me the temptation to glance at the tv. but den im seeing and hearing this for real now! its TOO loud. thats the best part! when the show itself drowns the noise of the crowd, nobody else can steal the show now. other den this, i would say the next best thing would be to actually sit at the pit stop grandstand and better den that, to race a F1 car itself. thats the reason i rather take manual license. with hope one day i get to race in those real speed demons! haha!
it was awesome to see the crowd cheering and all. especially during the last round when they are waiting for the seconds when the car pass the finishing line. becaus ein such a sports, even the miliseconds matter. travelling at almost 300km/h or 83.3m/s life is a blur and the g forces are enough to knock an average man out. its not just skills and good decision, healt and luck plays a part. while working i managed to bump into some of the drivers in the gym and had a little chat. some can be a dick, and some are just plain old guys. and i saw shilpa shetty too! hotstuff!
ok back to that nite, den the race was done, but its not over. now i got to race home. beat the crowd by walking to bugis instead and was home in a jiffy. a nite worth remembering and reliving over and over!
once i get fucking youtube to be working and properly uploading videos...i'll post it on my blog. for now..just hang in there..
some photos.
and the videos...part 1 and 2..
my dad's back home. for a week now. and he cooks breakfast when hes not working. its nothing special but its always nice. i get reminded of how i see chefs in the ritz modifing recipies with what ever food they could find left. u see!...that why men are just better den women at everything. women can look at the cook book and still destroy everything. haha!
